Tom Joly’s approach to fuelling wasn’t about sticking rigidly to a plan. It was about having a target, then adapting how he got there as the race unfolded.

“Fuel plan, you want to have an idea of what you’re going to take, which for me is around 100g per hour throughout the race, but it’s going to vary and fluctuate a lot. From the start, you could probably push it higher as the intensity is high. As you go into the night, it gets colder and it’s often harder to drink and eat. There’s a larger degree of flexibility with fuelling to adapt to the race, much like my training this year, which has gone a lot more on feel rather than a regimented structure.”
